Biography:
Dr. Ralph Mutrie was involved in figure skating in the north for some 35 years. He had an active hand in organizing two Canadian Championships at Memorial Gardens; was the President of the North Bay Club for seven years; served on the Board of the Canadian Figure Skating Association; was Chairman of the Northern Section; acted as a judge and referee for a number of major events over the years; was named a Life Member of the North Bay Figure Skating Club; received the Provincial Special Achievement Award; and was the 1986 winner of the Pete Palangio Trophy for services to his sport. He was also an innovator - had a hand in the starting of power skating and established the requirements for the first badges. He founded "Make It a Date to Skate", the largest invitational free skating competition in the province in its prime. For many years he acted as the unofficial historian for the North Bay Figure Skating Club, writing a number of articles on the club and its members - all this from a man who became involved in the sport in 1950 only because his daughter started taking lessons.
